"When joining Trade Business Accountants as an Intermediate Tax Accountant, I joined a team that is passionate about providing our clients with an exceptional service that really makes a difference in their business & lives. The standard accounting approach of waiting for a client to ask for their work to be completed, to then completing & sending it out whilst not speaking to the client for another year is not how we do things here. At TBA, we work with our clients year-round and guide them to get the best result from their business, whilst making meaningful choices and planning correctly along the way. For a fully remote team that is spread across Australia, the culture at TBA is the best I have experienced in my working career. And you will be actively involved in providing these services to the firm’s clients.

Is there support available, or am I expected to do everything myself?

Do you use timesheets or billable hour targets?

We do not operate on traditional timesheets and instead use new technology. More importantly, your hours aren’t linked to client billings. We operating on a subscription pricing model which allows us to focus on: Client outcomes, responsiveness, quality advice, relationships, and proactive value. Rather than billable hour pressure and worrying over every 6-minute increment.

What does success look like in this role?

Success in this role means consistently delivering high-quality work, being proactive, and becoming someone the team can genuinely rely on. You’ll be supporting Senior Tax Accountants with compliance, tax planning, and advisory work while steadily building your technical capability and confidence. Over time, success looks like taking on greater ownership, improving your judgement, developing stronger client relationships, and progressing toward a more senior advisory-focused role. At TBA, we care far more about outcomes, growth, and attitude than ticking boxes or clocking hours.

How client-facing is the role?

This role is moderately client-facing and grows more client-facing as your skills and confidence develop. You’ll regularly communicate with clients via phone, email, Teams, and meetings to gather information, answer questions, assist with compliance matters, and support Senior Tax Accountants in delivering great outcomes. You won’t be thrown in the deep end, but you also won’t sit hidden behind a screen doing compliance forever. The goal is to help you build confidence working directly with business owners and develop genuine advisory capability over time.

What software and systems does TBA use?

We use an ever growing suite of modern cloud-based systems including: Xero, Dext, Asana, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Xpm, Practice Protect, Tax Sorted, Now Infinity, ATO Mate, Ignition etc. We also actively use AI and technology tools to improve efficiency and reduce low-value admin work such as Savvywise and Brieff.io

Do you use AI within the firm?

Yes. We use tools like Brieff.io and Savvywise to reduce time spent on repetitive admin tasks like meeting notes and tax research. We believe technology should help great accountants operate at a higher level, not replace critical thinking. And this will continue to develop over time as more technology become available.

What qualifications and experience do you require?

We are looking for professionals with: Minimum 5 years in Australian public practice, strong tax technical capability, strong communication skills, and high confidence working directly with serious business owners and supporting senior staff. Is there career progression available?

Yes. TBA is growing quickly, and there are genuine opportunities for progression for high performers who demonstrate: Leadership, technical capability, ownership, commercial thinking, and strong client management. As an intermediate accountant you can progress into a senior position, from a senior position to a manager, then from a manager to a salary partner.

What is the team culture like?

Our culture is collaborative, positive, accountable, and high performing. We value things like: Extreme ownership, proactivity, continuous improvement, teamwork, high standards, clear communication. We do not tolerate: Big egos, silly office politics, micromanagement, blame shifting, negative thinking, and low accountability. We just want to do great work, with great people.

What kind of person thrives at TBA?

People who thrive here are: Commercially minded, technically strong, highly proactive, client-focused, self-managed, positive, detail-oriented, and comfortable taking ownership. The best fit is someone who genuinely enjoys helping business owners solve problems and improve outcomes.

What kind of person is NOT suited to this role?

This role is probably not suited to someone who: Wants low-responsibility compliance work, avoids difficult conversations, dislikes client interaction, needs constant supervision, resists technology, refers bureaucracy over action, waits to be told what to do.

Do you provide equipment for remote work?

Yes. We provide the equipment needed to help you perform at a high level, including if you do not already have everything in your home office set up. This includes: Laptop, monitors, ergonomic equipment, mouse, webcam etc.

Is there flexibility around family commitments and appointments?

Yes. We understand people have lives outside work and aim to create a sustainable, long-term working environment built around trust, communication, and ownership.

Will I be overloaded with too many clients?

No. One of the biggest problems in traditional firms is that high performers are often punished with larger and larger workloads simply because they are competent. Great accountants should not be a victim of their own success. We actively work to avoid that. Our goal is to give talented professionals the capacity, support, systems, and structure needed to actually deliver exceptional work, not burn them out under impossible workloads.

Will I spend my life tracking time and worrying about billables?

Most accountants know the feeling: Watching the clock, stressing over billables, trying to “look productive”, splitting every day into 6-minute increments. That’s not how we operate. We care about: Client outcomes, responsiveness, quality advice, ownership, and communication. Not how long it took you to send an email.

Will I actually have time to think strategically?

Yes. We specifically structure the role to free Senior Tax Accountants from unnecessary low-value admin wherever possible. You’ll have support from intermediate accountants, CSO, systems, automation, AI tools, and leadership so you can focus on: Strategy, relationships, tax planning, complex problem solving, and commercial thinking. Not endless administrative bottlenecks.

Is this one of those firms that says “flexible” but still expects you online 24/7?

No. We believe flexibility only works when paired with ownership and communication. We trust great people to manage their responsibilities professionally without unnecessary micromanagement. And more than that, when you’re offline – you’re offline.

Will I still be learning at TBA?

Absolutely. We strongly believe great accountants never stop improving. We invest heavily into: Tax training, advisory capability, technology, AI systems, CPD, etc. The profession is changing quickly, and we want our team ahead of the curve.

Will I just be another number?

No. We built TBA specifically to avoid the “big corporate cog” feeling many professionals experience in larger firms. Your contribution, ideas, and effort will genuinely matter here. Your voice will always be valued. And you’ll never feel like just another cog in a large machine.

Do you reward initiative?

Yes. We highly value people who: Improve systems, identify opportunities, solve problems proactively, raise issues early, and help teammates. The best opportunities at TBA go to people who take ownership rather than waiting for direct instructions.

Why do accountants enjoy working remotely at TBA?

For many people, remote work gives them back hours of their life every week. Especially from losing the daily commute to the office. With that new found time, our team can focus more on: Family, health, training, or hobbies. They also find that it is a very streamlined way to work. Every meeting is virtual, which means you have better control over your day and less constant interruptions when you’re trying to focus and work.

What happens if I bring clients to the firm?

While it’s not expected in your role, bringing clients to the firm is highly appreciated (and encouraged). For every referral sign up, you will receive commission equal to 10% of the client’s total first year fee. This commission is paid after the client has completed their first 12 months with TBA and the full annual fee has been collected.

How quickly can I progress?

Progression at TBA is based on capability, ownership, judgement, attitude, and results, not simply tenure or politics. For high performers, there is genuine opportunity to progress quickly. An Intermediate Accountant can progress into a Senior role, from Senior into Manager, and ultimately into Salary Partner over time. We are growing fast and actively prefer promoting from within wherever possible.

Will I actually get exposure to advisory work?

Yes. Many firms talk about “advisory” but in reality keep intermediates stuck preparing tax returns for years with very little commercial exposure. At TBA, while compliance remains an important foundation, you’ll also gain exposure to: Tax planning, business structuring, cash flow discussions, commercial decision making, client meetings, and strategy conversations alongside senior accountants. The goal is to help you become a commercially strong advisor, not just a technically competent preparer.

Will I be mentored and reviewed?

Absolutely. You’ll work closely with Senior Tax Accountants, Pod Managers, and leadership who are there to support your development, answer questions, review work, and help you improve. You won’t be thrown in the deep end and expected to “figure it out” alone. At the same time, we also believe growth comes through ownership and responsibility. The goal is to progressively build your confidence, judgement, technical capability, and advisory skillset so you continue developing into a stronger accountant and advisor over time.

How much autonomy will I have?

A lot, but autonomy comes with ownership. We hire great people and get out of their way. That means no micromanagement, unnecessary bureaucracy, or someone constantly looking over your shoulder. You’ll be trusted to manage your responsibilities, communicate proactively, prioritise work, and deliver a high standard. At the same time, support is always there when needed. We believe the best environment is one where talented people have both freedom and support, not one or the other.

How are performance and success measured if there are no billable hours?

We care about outcomes, not minutes. Rather than obsessing over billables or six-minute increments, success is measured through things like: Quality of work, responsiveness, ownership, technical capability, communication, client experience, teamwork, reliability, judgement, and contribution to outcomes. In simple terms: Are you producing great work? Helping clients and teammates? Solving problems? Improving? Taking ownership? That matters far more to us than how long something took.

How much exposure will I get to complex tax work?

You’ll get meaningful exposure to complex tax matters far earlier than many traditional firms. Because we work almost exclusively with established business owners and family groups, you’ll regularly be exposed to areas such as: Companies, trusts, Div 7A, FBT, CGT, tax planning, business structuring, multi-entity groups, cash flow strategy, asset protection considerations, and more. You won’t be expected to know everything immediately, but you will work alongside experienced senior accountants and progressively build capability through real-world exposure, mentorship, and hands-on learning.

What makes TBA different from a traditional accounting firm?

Quite a lot, actually. Most traditional firms are reactive, compliance-heavy, heavily focused on timesheets, and often bogged down by bureaucracy, office politics, micromanagement, and “that’s how we’ve always done it” thinking.

TBA is different.

We’re fully remote, highly collaborative, technology-driven, and focused on proactive tax strategy and advisory, not just year-end compliance.

We don’t obsess over six-minute increments, we don’t want people glued to billables, and we don’t want talented professionals buried under unnecessary admin. Instead, we focus on: Client outcomes, proactive value, flexibility, commercial thinking, strong relationships, continuous improvement, and creating a genuinely great environment for high-performing professionals to thrive.

"One of the biggest shifts for me has been moving from a reactive style of accounting to genuine proactive advisory. In previous roles, so much of the work focused on reviewing historical numbers after year-end, when the opportunity to influence outcomes had already passed. At TBA, we work closely with clients throughout the year to help them plan ahead, make informed decisions, and achieve better results for their businesses. Despite being a fully remote team, the culture is incredibly supportive and collaborative. I’ve built strong relationships with colleagues across Australia and have always felt connected, valued, and encouraged to grow professionally. The flexibility of working from home, combined with the opportunity to do meaningful work, has made this a genuinely rewarding place to build my career. For accountants who want to move beyond simply reporting the numbers and instead play a more strategic role in helping clients succeed, TBA is an exciting place to be."
